I guess if you were with one triumphalistic group (”The CEC is the only TRUE Church”), it’s only natural to go with yet another triumphalistic group (”Orthodoxy is the only TRUE Church”) as evidenced by the “True Convergence” podcast below.
True Convergence: Orthodox Podcast #1
True Convergence Orthodox Podcast #1
Host:
Jacob Lee — Icon New Media Network
Participating:
Fr. John Denny Roland —St.’s Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Hot Springs Arkansas
Fr. Patrick Cardine — St. Patrick’s Orthodox Church, Warrenton, Virginia
Fr. Patrick and Fr. John Denny talk about their journey from the Charismatic Episcopal Church into the Orthodox Church. Both Fr. Patrick and Fr. John Denny have recently been ordained in the western rite of the Antiochian Orthodox Church.
Please listen to their journeys and leave comments and ask questions. Fr. Patrick and Fr. John would love to hear from you.
This is the inaugural show! We did not know what we were going to call it or that it was going to be a regular deal when we first recorded it. This recording, along with the Man in Black Shows on the Charismatic Episcopal Church, have inspired a new podcast series on the Convergence Movement. We will be sharing more stories and more Journeys into the Orthodox Church on this show. Look for not just audio, but blog posts as well. We have more things in mind so make sure and stay tuned into the True Convergence: Orthodox Podcast.
This show was conducted via skype.

At least in my circles, we don’t think of the CEC as the one true church. From our Bishop down we’ve been taught that it’s more important that someone be in a church with good solid teachings, than to not be in church at all. At least, that’s what I’ve learned. It’s one of the things I like about the CEC.

I’m curious as to where the CEC is saying that it’s the only true church. Granted, I’ve only been in for about 3 years, but I’ve never heard that.
Thanks for posting the podcast. I’ll be interested in listening, since I know Fr. Patrick.

There has been a triumphalistic streak in the movement that was hopefully to die down after the initial surge of newness and excitement about the new thing God was doing in the CEC.
It has been widely reported by papaz and others that the bishop of the Central Diocese was trying to root out “papists” in his territory and went so far as to say that “we don’t need to come to Rome — Rome needs to come to us” at a diocesan gathering. If that’s not triumphalism, I don’t know what is.

Bishop Davidson has stated that we are not Rome, and we are not trying to be Rome, but I never heard him say that Rome needed to come to us. Perhaps that was one of the meetings I missed, but I’ve never heard that stated or even alluded to.

Actually, I heard the originally quoted: “We don’t need Rome…Rome needs us”, came from Bp. Kessler and ABp. Adler. The variations on a theme, later resounded as the one mentioned as being attributed to Bp. Davidson. This, too, I thought was old news. It widely circulated 8-10 years ago in the CEC. Just after Bp. Zampino’s trip to the Vatican, the CEC held a HOB meeting at which that theme came up.
Peace,
